Aldgate and the Terror of Jack the Ripper
The traditional East End where “Jack the Ripper” preyed on the innocent and the perhaps not so innocent. Now populated by markets and curry houses in Brick Lane, this area has changed a lot over the past 200 years.
Our crawl avoids the obvious and takes you to some more interesting pubs, but you’ll still get to Dirty Dicks (as what trip to London can be complete if you don’t?).
The best pubs in Aldgate
This walk is 2.1km and should take you less than 3 hours. The walk passes Petticoat Lane, the famous East End market and Brick Lane, the infamous restaurant strip. The waiters will tempt you in and with those wonderful cooking smells it’s hard to resist. Be careful and agree the price!
London Underground (Tube) Lines are:
Metropolitan Line, Circle Line, Hammersmith and City Line
Interesting point on this walk:- The East End of London was notorious for gangs, known locally as “Firms”.
